Archbishop Hannan Taps Notice
The Special
Forces Association and Chapter XXX has lost a very distinguished
HONORARY MEMBER, THE MOST REVEREND PHILIP M. HANNAN, Retired Archbishop
of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of the Greater New Orleans, LA. Area
which he presided over from 1965 to 1988. He passed away on September
29, 2011 at the age of 98 (1913-2011) who was active and lively in
retirement until the last couple of years. He was in the US Army from
1940 to 1945 serving as a Chaplain in the 82nd Airborne Division who
jumped into Normandy during WW2, and was affectionately known as “The
Jumping Padre”. He was always a champion of the US Military and its
veterans both nationally and locally. The Archbishop became a behind the
scenes confidant of President John F. Kennedy when he was first in the
House of Representatives and later when he became President. Their
friendship was so close that upon the President’s untimely Death the
First Lady, Mrs Jacquelyn had The Archbishop deliver the eulogy at the
President’s funeral.
For the funeral of Archbishop Hannan on October 6, 2011 the
Honor Guard was provided by the 82nd Airborne Division. A detailed
obituary on his death may be viewed in the NO LA newspaper at:
www.nola.com. For more complete information on the tremendous
accomplishments of his life see: www.wikipedia.com.
